(Jason Illidge)
Photographer Jason Illidge was born in the heart of London, UK. Throughout his life, he has been passionate about the arts, including music, photography, literature, painting, and theater. During his teenage years and into his early thirties, he was a professional musician, frequently touring and recording across the UK and Europe. After moving to Shenzhen in early 2010, his passion for photography evolved from a mere interest into a profound desire to capture and document Chinese culture and the lives and changes of the Chinese people.
Since 2016, Jason has been not only a professional photographer but also a photography instructor and mentor. In recent years, he has had the honor of being invited to give a photography lecture at the prestigious Peking University, where he shared his experiences and insights from living in China for over a decade as a Londoner, through images and words. He was also invited to give an open photography lecture at Shanghai Lida College to over 2,000 students.
In addition to running his art and photography business in Shenzhen, Jason is a passionate and humorous photography teacher. He has taught hundreds of students ranging from 10 to 60 years old, visiting places such as the Gubei Water Town on the Great Wall near Beijing, the beautiful West Lake in Hangzhou, and various cities across China. His travels have also taken him to Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Combining his love for travel with the joy of imparting knowledge is a rare and fortunate blend for him.
Jason's courses and photography workshops aim not just to share information but also to inspire and provoke reflection, helping students recognize photography as a means to understand the people and the world around them. In his own photographic work, he focuses mainly on capturing the everyday people who surround us but are often overlooked. He enjoys both color and black-and-white photography with digital and film cameras. He believes that the stories and emotions captured in an image are everything and that each image has two subjects: the person in front of the lens and the person behind it.
Jason has served as an international guest judge for the China Photographers Association and has been a finalist in the Shenzhen Eye Photography Competition three times. He founded the South China Photographers Group, bringing together Western and Chinese photographers to share their passion for photography.
